Nails, cats and a parking lot

Some thoughts :)

Just a random photo.

Nails
A few years ago my friend was obsessed with my nails. They were not good enough for her, and she was begging me to let her fix 'em. Okay, I let her do the nail file magic to my claws. And what did I get? Almost on the next day my now better looking nails started flaking! It never ever happens to them. Maybe they're not made of iron but of something like that anyway. My conclusion? Don't listen to people with priorities different from yours :). Everybody is ready to give you advice, but they live a different life. I like my nails strong, even if – oh my god! - not perfectly looking. If you don't live your life the way you want, who else will do it for you?
(Please don't send me tips on nail filing, I don't have time for this stuff ^.^ Thanks.)

Cats
Lately I was thinking about my dear Janne Da Arc. These guys started playing live and recording nice albums when they were very young. I'm already 26, and not even a half of the most important goals in life is achieved. Nightwish released their debut CD when they were 18-19 (!), and it's an awesome album with beautiful keyboards, I love it! Why these bands achieved so much so early, and I haven't published anything yet? ^^ Well, they were working very hard, rehearsing like every day for many hours. Do I work on my book regularly, a lot? Usually, no. I don't spend hours watching TV (actually we don't have TV at all), but I way too often waste my time either doing unnecessary things or by just being not very organized, which does happen to me from time to time. I want to become a professional writer, to be fluent in Finnish and Japanese, to have a strong body. Work, work, work! I don't have any magic talents for languages or writing, but I'm ready to put all my blood, sweat and tears into doing them. And my passion :).
So how did these thoughts affect me? At once I sat down to work on a profile of one of my characters (she's my favourite from this novel ^^), then I studied Japanese for a few hours (so many kanji, so many kanji *_*), and on the next day I started reading a new book in Finnish – at 4 a.m. :).

This book is about cats, and it seems there are no humans there. Cats even go to dances there o_O I read the first chapter before sleep, pretty nice and easy to read.

A Parking Lot
And today I took my hubby to a parking lot. Guess why :). We don't own a car and don't plan to buy it anytime soon (I'd better walk), but I really really needed to go to a parking lot. Because... a parking lot plays a big role in the beginning of my book! Did anyone guess it right that I was researching something in field conditions for the sake of literature? :) We went to the parking lot of Sello shopping mall. I got lots of ideas, yay! Sometimes it's so funny to be a writer ^.^ I wonder where I'd have to go next time... Okay, now I need to write a post for my other blog. I have four blogs. (T_T)

  3. "I don't have any magic talents for languages or writing." Merepek! That's Malay for nonsense. :DDD I learned it from a fellow blogger in Malaysia. You're Russian; you write perfect, flowing English; you're learning Finnish and Japanese. Maybe it requires hard work, but the end-result on your English blog looks effortless, and isn't that a hallmark of good writing?

(I'm serious. You have a wonderful ability to segue from quirky to serious, and your sentences have a natural rhythm. You can start worrying when you hit 50 and you still haven't published anything.)

I think you need to include a chocolate shop in your book so that you can do extensive, meticulous field research.

PS: What language is your book?

    1. *blushing* Thank you ^.^ What I meant to say was that all I have is a result of a lot of work, not a magic pill, so it means that anyone can learn a language if working hard enough. I want to inspire more people to study languages or write or whatever they always wanted to do but thought they didn't have the talent for it.

I confess I have something like a talent for Russian, because it has always been flawless. I don't remember all the rules (and Russian is hard even for natives) but I just feel that this is the way to write it. It's natural. But my English wasn't like this. I remember times when I could easily say "What do you did?" ^^

I'm not worried I'm not published yet, I just like to think of those people who achieved something a lot earlier to make it push me forward ^^ I do slack sometimes, you know.

A chocolate shop? Well, hubby would be delighted to help me with that one, he has not just a sweet tooth, but a sweet jaw. I can't eat so many sweets, I'm a veggie-type ^^ I dreamed of eating artichokes tonight o_O

All my books probably will be in Russian. I think it's a very good language for literature, very expressive. I don't like how it sounds, but I love reading and writing in it. And Russian punctuation is awesome (headache for some, pleasure for me ^^).

    2. I agree that anyone can learn any language with enough effo ...

Wait. No. Actually I don't. Experiences in my own classroom seems to indicate that some students have no instinct for any language except (and perhaps including) the one they were breastfed since birth.

Writing? I will believe until the day I die that good writers are born, not made. You can hone your craft, but you can't create it, god-like, from nothing. (I don't think you have to worry about this one. Grin.)

I'm glad you're using other young achievers to push you, because that means we don't have to wait until you're 50 to read your book. It will be in Russian? Help! Does that mean I have to learn Russian now?! o_0

    3. Punctuation? Why is Russian punctuation awesome? What's the thing about Russian punctuation? Post, please! ^^

    4. Just look at the length of our comments! (^.^)

I learned English grammar all by myself. My school knowledge of English was "lots of words, zero grammar". Academic approach just doesn't work for everyone. I highly recommend this blog:
      http://www.fluentin3months.com/
for non'academic language hacking tips ^^

My plan is to write books so good that publishers from abroad will be begging for rights, lol So don't worry ;-) And even if you decide to learn Russian, you have A LOT of time ahead - I'm a slow writer.

Russian punctuation... well, it's musical. It's like pauses in music, all those commas and other things whose names I don't know bring such a nice rhythm to sentences. (A video where I read a Russian text with lots of commas is planned for 33 letters blog.) Commas also indicate a lot of stuff that makes sentences less confusing even if they're very long. They let you have weirder order of words without confusing your reader, because commas or their lack will show to which noun this participle clause belongs and such. Punctuation marks bring so many nuances to the meaning.

      Am I a comma nerd now? o_O

    5. So intresting. I've never got any thought like this about our comma, etc. It seems a little eхaggerating for me. Are you really sure?

    6. I am. :)

    7. I'll punish not, forgive you
      I'll punish, not forgive you

Do you agree it's identical sample?

    8. Doesn't sound natural to me. We need a native's opinion on this :)

    9. No matter how it sounds to anyone.
I assume, these clauses both are impeccable in regard to the languish.

      Delete
    10. What languish? o_O

Anyway, let's imagine this can be done in English as well. So what? You can't do it in Finnish and Japanese, for example, and in many other languages. I don't say Russian punctuation is unique, I say it's complex and I like it. English punctuation is much simpler and thus boring for me.

      Delete
    11. In fact I hardly know the punctuation at all:) And it doesn't depend on the languish I write:) It most likely is the reason I can't compare or properly appreciate all those subtle punctuation nuances:)
therefore all the languages(this spelling is a little better, is not?) are just the same for me in regard to this issue:)

    12. I think "I'll punish not, forgive you" is a sentence you'd find in poetry, but not in ordinary conversation. (Wouldn't it be fun if ordinary conversation sounded like poems?!)

The best "punctuation makes a difference" example in English remains this classic:

woman without her man is nothing
Woman, without her man, is nothing.
Woman! Without her, man is nothing.

Then there's the English Christmas carol "God rest ye merry gentlemen". It should have a comma. Where should that comma be added, d'you think? ;)

Japanese has very simple punctuation compared to many other languages, perhaps because particles and verb conjugations tell you what belongs where. Bit like Latin: word order isn't that important.

PS: You're not a comma nerd; you're a nerd, full stop. :DDD

    13. Ah, poetry... Lord Byron to the rescue!

I speak not, I trace not, I breathe not thy name,
      There is grief in the sound, there is guilt in the fame;
But the tear that now burns on my cheek may impart
The deep thoughts that dwell in that silence of heart.

I like it, "Woman! Without her, man is nothing." ^.^

    14. But I don't! I'm against the male sex discrimination anywhere:) Although the example is really good. It seems if you had learnt about english соммаs much more, you would fall in love with them too:)

    15. Sometimes love happens from the first sight, and no matter how many times you look, you won't fall in love if the first sight didn't work ^^

    16. May I cut in here? Heated arguments(am I using a proper word?)sound interesting. As for this comment, I'm against it.
